Christian Education OpportunitiesSunday School Hour - 9:45 - 10:45 am. Children's ClassesYouth ClassesAdult Sunday School ClassesAdult Midweek ClassesNurseryDuring our Sunday School hour and 11:00 am worship service, our nursery offers loving care for infants and children who are one or two years of age. Preschool ClassThis class is for children of ages three and four. The teachers are Mary Raine Paxton & Susie Buchanan. They use a curriculum called the Hands-On Bible curriculum. The children will begin to learn Bible stories through a variety of teaching activities, including art and music. Kindergarten and First Grade ClassThis class uses the Exploring Faith curriculum to teach Bible stories and Christian songs with an emphasis on how faith matters in our everyday lives. The children do crafts and play games that encourage the children to remember the Bible stories and live according to Jesus' teachings. This class is taught by Marie Grasso, Nancy West & Fran & John Elrod. Second and Third Grade ClassTaught by Bob Moreschi & Tom Jones, these children will also use the Exploring Faith curriculum. As their reading and comprehension skills develop, they will use the Bible more. The class will incorporate other activities, such as drama, art, games and music. Fourth and Fifth Grade ClassThis class, taught by Beth Jewell, Joe Grasso & Alice Correll, delves deeper into reading the Bible and looking more closely at its relevance in our lives. As in other classes, the teachers incorporate a number of teaching methods as the class studies its lessons from the Exploring Faith curriculum. Youth ClassesCurriculumBoth the Senior High and Middle School Sunday School Classes will use the curriculum "Claim the Life" by Cokesbury. This comprehensive youth curriculum's lessons revolve around a single key word or phrase from Scripture. These words help teach the language of faith. There is a focus on spiritual formation and fostering Christian community. For the Senior Highs, some of the key words are Belonging, Blessing, Steadfast Love, New Creation, Peace, Discipline and Thanksgiving. Some of the main themes for the Middle School class are Worship, Praying, Image of God, Commitment, Forgiving, Follow, Kindness and Servant. There are video vignettes for many of the lessons which provide for further discussion. Sunday School helps us learn more about God; it also provides a safe place to be yourself and reflect on God's movement in your life. Please join your peers and experience this time of Sabbath. Confirmation ClassThis class for eighth grade and above is for those young people preparing to join the church. Middle School ClassFor sixth through eighth graders, this class is taught by Laura & Boyd Brown, Debbie & Frank Friedman, Randy & Tammy Shomo, & Andy Johnson & Cynthia Penne. High School ClassOur ninth through twelfth graders will be led this year by Theresa & Kirk Luder & Joe Irby. ASK ClassThe ASK Class will use the Living the Questions curriculum from Wild Goose Publications, a division of the lona Community. This 21-part series on progressive Christianity consists of20-minute videos whose topics are presented by widely known contemporary theologians, such as Marcus Borg, Walter Brueggemann, Helen Prejean, Rick Uford-Chase and John Bell. Each week, participants will discuss the topics presented. Agape ClassLed by Matt Paxton, this class will be studying the Book of Esther, using the LifeChange series published by NavPress. The Book of Esther contains stories meant to inspire believers to affect their world by trusting God. Young Adult ClassThe Young Adult class will continue its video study, Serious Answers to Hard Questions. Ten Christian and Jewish theologians address topics such as evil, religion and science, evangelism and tolerance, the Resurrection and forgiveness. Theology ClassLed by Lad Sessions, this class begins its second year in the study of the great classic theology book, The Christian Faith by Friedrich Schleiermacher. Equipping the SaintsThis special, year-long class will be an intensive study of Bible basics, foundations of our faith, and leadership techniques in preparation for the future work of our church. The curriculum is based on Sara Covin Juengst's book, Equipping the Saints, written to help rejuvenate and inspire members of her own congregation. Weekday Classes Faithful ParentingThe Faithful Parenting class, led by Deb Klein, meets the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month from 10:15 - 11:30 am. This is a spiritually nurturing class for women who are engaged in faithfully raising their children as Christian believers. The class will study St, Benedict's Toolbox - The Nuts and Bolts of Everyday Benedictine Living by Jane Tomaine and the Upper Room Daily Disciplines 2007. Lectio DivinaThis contemplative study of the Lectionary Bible selection for the week meets on Tuesday mornings at 10:00am. Listening for GodThis is a discussion and reading group using Listening for God - Contemporary Literature and the Life of Faith. This fall, the class will use Volume 2 in the series with stories by John Updike, Anne Tyler, Tobias Wolff, Gail Godwin and other well known authors. Deb Klein teaches this class which meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. Men's Saturday FellowshipThe Men's Fellowship class will meet the second Saturday of each month at 7:30 am for breakfast followed by study and discussion of a book of their choosing. The class is considering books at this time. Explore ClassThis class, led by Bill Klein, meets for three Sundays to talk about what it means to be a Presbyterian and to discover more about Lexington Presbyterian Church. Anyone interested in knowing more about our theological background or in joining our church is encouraged to join the group and explore. |
