LexPres Web SiteIn January, 2008, the Lexington Presbyterian Church web site underwent a drastic revision. The following describes the changes. What was added? What changed?Where did everything go?What next? The most obvious change is the format, but there are many new features as well. The "About Us" page has been expanded to include directions to the church and local weather information for those who are considering visiting. There is additional information on church committees. Many more links to organizations we support have been added. The Communication Committee and the Web Manager welcome suggestions on what can be added to the web site to improve its interest and usefulness. Pretty much everything. ColorsThe most visible change is to the layout and colors. The colors navy blue, grey and red are from the official PCUSA palette of colors. Using white as the background for the main portion of the pages makes the information easier to read and maintain. LayoutThe new layout is similar to the old one, but has been much simplified. The header and index portions of the home page are carried over into most of the other pages, with two major exceptions: o Picture album pages do not have the header and index. These pages are fully devoted to the pictures. o Sermon, calendar and newsletter pages are stored and displayed as "PDF" (portable document format) documents, which do not contain HTML formatting. The home page will have two "feature" areas, which will display especially timely or important information. The selections are expected to change frequently. ContentThe Communications Committee is in the process of obtaining updated and revised content for all the information contained on the web site. The intent is for the information to remain timely and useful. StandardsFor those who are into the techie stuff, the web pages have been developed in XHTML and validated against the XHTML 1.0 transitional definitions. This is supposed to guarantee "interoperability" across browsers that support that standard. Additionally the web site has been tested with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0, Apple Safari 3.0 and Mozilla Firefox 2.0. The first pass of the web pages was created with Microsoft FrontPage 2003, but the pages have been heavily edited to remove redundancy and improve consistency. Here is a brief map of where things that were available on the home page and where they can be found on the new site.
Additional improvements are planned for the web site, but there shouldn't be changes this dramatic any time soon. Right now the major focus is on obtaining additional updated information for the individual headings. The next big effort will be directed toward identifying and including appropriate pictures to illustrate the various programs, events and activities. Longer term projects will be directed toward the technical underpinnings of the site to make it easier to use and maintain. |
